What Is An Ecodesign Stove?
If you have been researching wood burning or multi-fuel stoves recently, you will almost certainly have come across the term “Ecodesign”.
It appears on product listings, in manufacturer literature and in conversations with stove retailers and installers, but what does it actually mean and why should it influence the stove you choose?
Here is a clear explanation of what Ecodesign is, what it requires of stove manufacturers and why it matters for anyone buying a stove in the UK today.
What Is Ecodesign?
Ecodesign is a set of European regulations, adopted into UK law, that set minimum performance standards for solid fuel heating appliances including wood burning stoves, multi-fuel stoves and room heaters.
The regulations were developed in response to growing concerns about air quality, particularly in urban areas, and their primary aim is to significantly reduce the emissions of particulate matter, carbon monoxide and other pollutants produced by solid fuel appliances.
The Ecodesign regulations came into effect for solid fuel appliances in 2022, and any stove manufactured and sold since that date must meet the standards set out in the regulations.
Stoves that comply with these standards are referred to as Ecodesign Ready or Ecodesign Compliant appliances.
What Do Ecodesign Standards Require?
The Ecodesign regulations set limits on four key emissions: particulate matter, organic gaseous compounds, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides.
They also set a minimum efficiency requirement for the appliance. To achieve Ecodesign compliance, a stove must be tested by an accredited laboratory and demonstrate that it meets all of these limits under the specified test conditions.
In practical terms, Ecodesign stoves are significantly cleaner burning than the older appliances they replace.
Particulate emissions from a compliant stove are substantially lower than from a non-compliant one, and efficiency levels are generally higher, meaning more of the heat generated by the fuel reaches the room rather than being lost up the flue.
What Is The Difference Between Ecodesign & DEFRA Exempt?
These two terms are sometimes confused but they refer to different things and both remain relevant for stove buyers in the UK.
Ecodesign
Ecodesign sets minimum emissions and efficiency standards for all solid fuel appliances sold in the UK market. Any stove manufactured after 2022 must meet these standards regardless of where it is installed.
DEFRA Exempt
DEFRA exempt status is a separate designation that applies specifically to stoves intended for use in smoke control areas. In areas designated as smoke control zones under the Clean Air Act, it is an offence to produce smoke from a chimney unless the appliance being used is exempt.
A DEFRA exempt stove has been tested and approved to operate in these areas without producing unacceptable levels of visible smoke.
Whilst all DEFRA exempt stoves are likely to meet or exceed Ecodesign standards, not all Ecodesign stoves are necessarily DEFRA exempt.
If your property is in a smoke control area, you need to confirm that the stove you are considering carries DEFRA exempt status as well as being Ecodesign compliant.
Why Does Ecodesign Matter When Choosing A Stove?
Better Air Quality
The most significant benefit of Ecodesign stoves is their contribution to improved air quality. Older stoves and open fires are a meaningful source of particulate pollution, particularly in residential areas where many properties burn solid fuel.
Choosing a modern Ecodesign compliant stove significantly reduces the contribution your heating makes to local air pollution.
Higher Efficiency
Ecodesign stoves are generally more efficient than the older appliances they replace, meaning you get more heat output from the same amount of fuel. This translates into lower fuel costs over the life of the stove and a more comfortable, consistent heat output in the room.
Future-Proofing Your Investment
With air quality regulations likely to tighten further in the coming years, choosing an Ecodesign compliant stove from the outset makes sure your appliance meets current requirements and is well placed to remain compliant as standards evolve.
Buying an older, non-compliant stove to save money in the short term carries the risk of the appliance becoming subject to restrictions in the future.
